Our Story
Located in the heart of the Midwest, Carbon Dynamics Institute, LLC was established in 2003 as an independent contract mass spectroscopy facility. However, our story actually begins ten years earlier with a father and son - James R. Johnson and Stephen R. Johnson. The Johnsons wanted to create a service industry to provide novel approaches to old challenges that placed the client at the center of their mission. Beginning as an environmental and agricultural contract laboratory, it became evident that more advanced techniques could be employed to provide a higher level of both sensitivity and selectivity (referred to as detectivity). This approach caught the attention of the analytical industry leaders. Over the next several years, the Johnsons founded an alpha testing facility to generate method developments that would show the economic impact of this philosophy. By 2003, it was evident that these applications and services could be offered to both the regulatory and research markets. Since then, CDI has provided its clientele with a wide variety of analytical services all of which center around molecular characterizations.

Our new facility.
Carbon Dynamics Institute, LLC has moved its mass spectrometry services to a new facility, located in the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield, IL. Our new state of the art facility is a prime location for sample delivery, security, and industrial capabilities.

Our Mission
Carbon Dynamics Institute (CDI), LLC was established in the heart of the prairie to provide mass spectrometry services in a centralized location. The company began as a merger between an engineer and a neuropharmacologist. With different backgrounds and different experiences, a company was formed with a common goal - service.
Our Affiliations
CDI has affiliations with a wide variety of academic and industrial clientele. While the charge of these two are very different in scope and purpose, their need for precise and accurate data is the same. For our Regulatory clientele, we provide fast, high-quality compliance testing that meet the needs of your agency. For our Research clientele, we collaborate on grants & publications, provide innovative solutions for molecular assays, and offer support for data interpretation. We work with our clientele until the project is complete.
CDI is a contract research organization that provides analytical support for the most challenging projects. We specialize in mass spectrometry techniques for both preparation and advanced chemical determinations. With an experienced team of professionals, our central mission is to provide high quality analyte determinations that produce defensible data to serve both our regulatory and research clientele.
Our Passion
CDI is passionate about the discovery of new molecular entities (NMEs) derived from toxins of venomous animals. We have a large vivarium of specimens as well as reliable colleagues that serve as our reservoir for novel molecules. These naturally occurring entities provide the basis for our understanding of structure-function relationships. With the proper biochemical and physiological characterizations, we are moving closer to structure elucidations that can be used to develop pharmacophores for future therapeutic interventions.
